Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

Understand the LLB route in India, including course structure, eligibility, admission, legal training, careers and professional checks.

Overview

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is the professional law degree for graduates who want formal legal education in India. It is distinct from five-year integrated law programmes entered after Class 12, such as BA LLB or BBA LLB.

What students study

Students typically study constitutional law, contracts, torts, criminal law, family law, property law, company law, civil and criminal procedure, evidence and legal ethics. Moot courts, drafting, legal aid, internships and court observation help connect doctrine with professional practice.

Duration and study options

The graduate-entry LLB is generally a three-year full-time programme. Students intending to practise should verify that the college, university and course comply with the current requirements of the Bar Council of India; distance or online law degrees do not substitute for the recognised professional route.

Eligibility and admission

Applicants normally need a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution and must meet the marks and category rules stated by the relevant university or admission authority. Universities may use national, state or institution-level law entrance tests, qualifying-degree merit or other published processes.

Career and further study

After meeting applicable enrolment and examination requirements, graduates may pursue advocacy. Other paths include legal research, compliance, contracts, policy, corporate legal teams, public service and legal operations. Options include LLM, specialised diplomas, research, judicial-service preparation and domain study in areas such as taxation, technology or intellectual property.

Student checklist

Before applying, compare the syllabus, recognition or regulatory approval where applicable, delivery mode, fees, practical training, entrance requirements and placement support. Always confirm the current rules with the university or admission authority.

Important: Course structures, duration, eligibility and professional recognition can vary by university, specialisation and academic year. Use this overview for planning and verify the latest prospectus before applying.
