Overview
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a postgraduate medical degree in clinical, para-clinical or non-clinical specialities such as general medicine, paediatrics, radiodiagnosis, pathology, anaesthesiology, pharmacology or community medicine. It is different from a research PhD despite the word doctor in the title.
What students study
Training is speciality-specific and combines advanced theory with supervised clinical service, laboratory or diagnostic work, seminars, journal clubs, case presentations, teaching and research. Residents normally complete a dissertation or thesis and progressively take responsibility under approved faculty supervision.
Duration and study options
A standard MD is generally three years of full-time postgraduate residency after MBBS, subject to current regulations and any prior recognised qualification. Compare college and seat recognition, patient or laboratory exposure, faculty, duty patterns, thesis support and hospital infrastructure.
Eligibility and admission
Applicants need a recognised MBBS qualification, completion of the required internship, medical registration and any additional conditions in the current admission bulletin. NEET-PG is the single eligibility-cum-ranking examination for most MD seats, while institutions covered by a separate authorised route may use their notified examination and counselling process.
Career and further study
After completing the degree and applicable registration requirements, graduates work as specialists in hospitals, clinics, laboratories, public health, teaching and research according to their branch. Options include super-speciality training, fellowships, research degrees, academic medicine, public health and advanced clinical certification.
