Overview
The Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BPO) is a professional rehabilitation programme focused on designing, fabricating and fitting artificial limbs and supportive devices. It combines health assessment, biomechanics, materials, workshop technology and patient-centred rehabilitation.
What students study
Students typically study anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomechanics, gait, materials, engineering drawing, workshop practice, lower- and upper-limb prosthetics, spinal and limb orthotics and rehabilitation. Casting, measurement, fabrication, alignment, fitting and supervised clinical cases are central.
Duration and study options
BPO is commonly four years plus a compulsory internship under the approved structure. Verify Rehabilitation Council of India recognition, workshop equipment, material access, clinical caseload, multidisciplinary placements, internship rotations and the professional-registration outcome.
Eligibility and admission
Applicants generally need Class 12 or equivalent with physics, chemistry and mathematics or biology, plus the marks, age and other conditions stated by the institution and applicable norms. Selection may use entrance examinations, qualifying marks, counselling and other published criteria.
Career and further study
Registered graduates work in rehabilitation centres, hospitals, prosthetic-orthotic laboratories, mobility services, community programmes, product organisations and assistive-technology projects. Options include Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics, rehabilitation engineering, assistive technology, public health and research.
