Who is affected?

The spot round is for candidates who qualify the NIFT 2026 examination, have a Common Merit Rank and satisfy the academic eligibility for their programme. Eligible candidates who were absent from earlier counselling rounds can participate. Candidates declared ineligible earlier because of cut-off marks, age, academic eligibility, document verification or another valid reason cannot participate.

Candidates already provisionally admitted in an earlier round can also participate for an upgrade. Their current allotted campus and programme will not appear as a selectable spot-round choice; after choices are locked, the existing admitted choice is automatically placed last in the new preference list.

Who must pay the Rs. 5,000 participation fee?

  • Newly registered candidates: must pay Rs. 5,000 before choice filling.
  • Candidates who secured a seat, paid the acceptance or academic fee and did not withdraw: are exempt from the spot-round participation fee.
  • Candidates who secured a seat but withdrew in an earlier round: must pay Rs. 5,000 before choice filling.

The guidelines state that the Rs. 5,000 registration or participation fee is non-refundable. This is separate from the admission fee payable after a new seat allotment.

Required student action

  1. Open the official NIFT counselling portal on or after July 19.
  2. Sign in with your existing credentials or complete the spot-round registration process if you are a new participant.
  3. Pay the Rs. 5,000 participation fee before July 22 when the fee applies to your case.
  4. If newly registered, monitor document-verification status and resolve any issue before the verification window closes.
  5. Enter campus and programme choices in genuine preference order.
  6. Review and lock the final choices by July 23 at midnight, then save a printable copy.
  7. Check the allotment result and download the provisional allotment letter on July 24.
  8. If a seat is allotted and the admission fee has not already been paid, complete payment by July 27.
  9. Report physically at the finally allotted NIFT campus on July 29 with the required original documents and payment records.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Confirm eligibility before paying

Check that you have a NIFT 2026 Common Merit Rank and meet the course-specific academic requirements. Refer to the official NIFT admissions page and prospectus for programme eligibility. A previous ineligibility decision is not reversed merely by spot-round registration.

2. Register and complete verification

Log in, complete the spot-round registration form and make the participation-fee payment if required. New candidates must also complete document verification. Existing verified candidates do not undergo a new spot-round document-verification process unless the portal specifically asks for an action.

3. Fill and lock choices carefully

The system may display choices even when no current vacancy is shown because virtual vacancies can arise during processing. Add only programmes and campuses you are willing to join, order them by real preference and lock the final list. If a candidate does not explicitly lock choices before the deadline, the last saved choices are automatically locked.

4. Respond to the allotment

Sign in on July 24, view the result and download the provisional allotment letter. Candidates who have not already paid the admission fee must pay it within the notified window to confirm the allotted seat.

5. Report at the allotted campus

Every candidate who has taken provisional admission by paying the admission fee in any round must report at the finally allotted campus on July 29. Follow the allotment letter and campus instructions for the exact reporting time, original certificates, photocopies and remaining payment requirements.

What happens if a deadline is missed?

A candidate who does not complete applicable registration, payment and verification steps cannot proceed to choice filling. Missing the admission-fee deadline cancels the allotted seat. The official guidelines also require physical reporting at the finally allotted campus, so candidates should not treat online fee payment alone as completion of admission.

Frequently asked questions

Can candidates absent from earlier rounds join the NIFT spot round?

Yes, if they remain eligible. Candidates declared ineligible during registration or document verification cannot participate.

Is the Rs. 5,000 spot-round fee refundable?

No. The official guidelines describe the registration or participation fee as non-refundable.

Do already admitted candidates need to pay the participation fee again?

Candidates who paid the acceptance or academic fee and did not withdraw are exempt. A candidate who withdrew an earlier seat must pay the Rs. 5,000 participation fee to join the spot round.

When is the last student-action date?

The final scheduled action is physical reporting at the allotted NIFT campus on July 29, 2026. Earlier online deadlines still apply independently.
