Overview
The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (BA LLB) is a five-year integrated undergraduate law programme entered after Class 12. It combines legal education with humanities or social-science subjects, allowing students to study law in its political, historical and social context.
What students study
The arts component may include political science, sociology, economics, history or English. Law papers commonly cover contracts, torts, constitutional law, criminal law, family law, property, company law, procedure, evidence and professional ethics. Moot courts, drafting, legal aid and internships build practical ability.
Duration and study options
BA LLB is generally a five-year full-time programme divided into ten semesters. Students who intend to practise should verify that the institution and course meet current Bar Council of India requirements, and compare moot-court support, legal clinics, library databases and internship access.
Eligibility and admission
Applicants normally need Class 12 or equivalent with the minimum marks, age and other conditions stated by the admission authority. Students from arts, commerce and science streams may apply unless a prospectus says otherwise. Selection may use CLAT, AILET, state or university law entrance tests, qualifying marks and counselling under the relevant notification.
Career and further study
After meeting applicable enrolment and examination rules, graduates may pursue advocacy. Other paths include corporate legal work, contracts, compliance, policy, legal research, public service and rights organisations. Options include LLM, specialist legal diplomas, judicial-service preparation, public policy, management and interdisciplinary research.
