Overview
The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is the primary professional medical degree in India. It combines biomedical sciences, clinical subjects, hospital-based learning and compulsory practical training for students preparing for the medical profession.
What students study
The curriculum progresses through areas such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, forensic medicine, community medicine, internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology. Duration and study options
MBBS is a full-time programme commonly described as four and a half academic years followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship, subject to the current medical curriculum and regulations. Attendance, clinical exposure, internship arrangements and college recognition are critical checks.
Eligibility and admission
Applicants must meet the current Class 12 or equivalent subject, marks, age and other eligibility requirements prescribed for medical admission. Physics, chemistry, biology or biotechnology and English conditions apply under the notified rules. Career and further study
After completing the degree, internship, registration and any other applicable requirements, graduates can work in supervised or entry medical roles, public health services and clinical settings.
