Overview
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level computer-based examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. GATE scores may be used for admission to postgraduate and doctoral programmes, possible financial assistance, and recruitment by participating public-sector organisations, subject to each institution’s rules.

Who may appear
According to the official GATE 2027 FAQ, students currently in the third year or a higher year of an approved undergraduate programme in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities may apply. Eligible degree holders may also apply. Candidates should use the official eligibility page and information brochure to check the rules for their qualification.
GATE 2027 changes
- A new Robotics and Automation (RA) test paper has been introduced.
- The syllabi for the 2027 test papers have been revised.
- Changes have been made to the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper and to sectional paper codes under XE, XH and XL.
- Candidates may apply for one or two papers, subject to the official two-paper combinations.
